Fuel Switching Project in Rio de Janeiro (Arrozal, GGP & Sul América Ceramics)

Description: This project activity encompasses three ceramic facilities: Arrozal, GGP, and Sul América, which are three small businesses that produce red ceramic bricks for the regional construction market in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In order to feed the ceramic kilns and generate thermal energy to produce its ceramic products, the three facilities used heavy oil (BPF) as fuel. The ceramics began a fuel switching project and ceased the use of fossil fuels. They began to feed the kilns with renewable biomasses, such as sawdust and construction residues. This was a pioneering practice in the region, and contributed to local sustainable development, since it generated a carbon neutral cycle. Renewable sources are less prejudicial to the environment, in terms of emissions of greenhouse gases.
