Fuel Switching Project in the Brazilian Cerrado biome, São Paulo (Sol Nascente Ceramic)

Description: Sol Nascente Ceramic is a small company that produces structural ceramic products, such as bricks, for the local market in the Panorama municipality and the state of São Paulo. The fuel previously used in the firing stage of the ceramic production cycle was native wood from the Cerrado biome. Improper use of the Cerrado’s native wood to fire ceramic has increased deforestation within the region, destabilizing one of the planet’s most important ecosystems. The enterprise produces 760 thousand ceramic pieces a month. The project, however, has made significant changes from its baseline scenario. The enterprise has started to generate thermal energy, helping to preserve the Biome.
